Boy Wonder (Mattel brand manager for JL/JLU line) recently posted some much-awaited replies to queries from AFI members. It seems we will be seeing a lot more characters from our favorite animated series.

I'm pasting the entire exchange below.

QUOTE ("Boy Wonder")
QUOTE
1) Out of all the JLU characters that have been released so far, plus the ones that were shown at Toy Fair/San Diego/Chicago, can you comment on which character was the most difficult for Mattel to negotiate in order to get made, if any?

If the character appears in the animation, DC and WB have been fairly accomodating in letting us produce the figures we want. For example, we thought the BM/SM 2-pack that is coming out in the 10" figures this spring at TRU would be a hard sell, but WB and DC were very accomodating in giving us the green light since the two appeared together in the animation.

QUOTE
) If the AFI JLU poll results were along the lines of what you guys were expecting, were there any surprises present?

Your comments were inline with what I was expecting

QUOTE
3) Do you personally have a favorite character that you are championing to get made? (Not exactly asking who it might be, just want to know if one exists)

They were already made with the Doomsday 6-pack anf Grundy. I am working on getting in the Designer's requestion, which is a Blue Devil that will only appear in a single.

QUOTE
Do you have any news and or pictures of the Superboy and Legion of Superheroes toy line? Will it be on scale with JLU?

It's not my line. However, as for scale, I think it will be different than JLU.

QUOTE
Thanks, Boy Wonder! I'm very happy to hear that we're getting at least one Batman villain in the JLU line. Also, it's good to hear that there may be more 6 packs and large characters in the future.

Target can't get enough 6-packs. We will do another one next year.

QUOTE
1.) Why did Big Barda make the cut but not Mr. Miracle? It seems odd to have Barda but not her husband.

Everyone comes on at different times.

QUOTE
2.) Why has Mattel gotten away from episode based three packs? Does this have to do with the addition of so many background characters that wouldn't fit into an episode designation? Did I answer my own question?

You answered your own question. I wanted to go crazy with the figures in 2007, but it would make sense to go back to episode packs in 2008.

QUOTE
3.) Does the success of Grundy mean that some of the more obscure characters that appeared as guest stars, such as Jonah Hex and Blackhawk, might have a chance as future exclusives? I'd love a Hex/ Blackhawk/ Warlord 3 pack next year!

I think that's a fair assumption.

QUOTE
Your comment about only a few buyers at SDCC confirms my opinion that the buyers, and hence the retailers, really don't know what the market potential is with collectors and adult buyers.

WMT is getting it with the 6" figure success. TRU is starting to get it with the 2 UP figure success. TGT is getting it with the 6-pack success. The word "collector" has been a good word at this Toy Fair. Thanks for supporting the lines as you have done. 2007 will even be better for collectors, and we are working to make even a better 2008 for you guys right now.

QUOTE
Should we pursue this avenue of attack to try and compel the folks that actually buy your products to find out what it is we want?

Everything helps, but they are seeing it firsthand in their sales numbers this fall. The best way to keep things going is to support the lines.

QUOTE
I have one real one - why, on the recent waves of 3 packs (Zantanna, etc) are the paint jobs so bad? Everyone I have found has had serious paint issues.

I forwarded your comment to Hong Kong. Let us look into it. Sorry to hear you are not satisfied witht he quality.

QUOTE
My question is this: What are the chances of seeing any future JLU characters, such as Warhawk, Batman Beyond, Aquagirl, the Dee Dees, Chuck-O, etc.....?

Probably not for 2007, but we are discussing 2008, and I think we will be looking to go more obscure if 2008 gets the green light.

QUOTE
Is Mr Terrific a good possibility if not a sure in for the next showing? What about Hawkman?

I saw a model of Hawkman, and boy does he look good.

QUOTE
Does this mean that Wal-Mart will be carrying JLU again?

WMT is taking the 3-packs in the fall. They dropped the singles. Something about more value.

QUOTE
Is there any possible chance of new BTAS figures making it to Big Lots? You made Joker, Catwoman, Penguin, Two Face, Robin, Batman, Nightwing and Batgirl but is there ever a possiblity of Riddler, Scarecrow, Mr. Freeze, Ivy, Croc or Harley Quinn being released in Big Lots?

My dad worked for Big Lots, so I always try to do a little extra for them. We will be re-releasing the 6" Comic Dlx figures there next year, along with the JLU motos and JLU figures from 2004.

QUOTE
I would love to see Clayface and a JLU Joker added to the line, but I do think there needs to be more variety in villains added to the line.

I saw the JLU Joker model as well, and he looks good.

QUOTE
I spoke with someone at Diamond who said they've talked with Mattel about exclusives. Since in the past their exclusives have tended to be re-decos, what can we expect
?
Diamond and other hobby channels will get solid villain mixes and first to market releases on some characters.

QUOTE
A question for boy wonder. Of the remaining male and female heros
as well as the remaining members of the secret society/legion of doom
are there any particular charachters that your in house designers really really want to do? how are the choices made? is it based on market reasearch, fan request, DC INPUT, or does it come down to luck of the draw? If I may say that if I were in the designers shoes looking at cell
prints from the show I would absolutley do the following.... HAWKMAN,
LIVEWIRE,KILLER FROST.SILVER BANSHEE,FIRE, THE KEY, DOCTOR
POLARIS,ATOMIC SKULL,GRODD,GIGANTA,THE CHEETAH,DOCTOR
MIDNIGHT.

The JLU Designer would love to do Giganta. She was pitched in an execution yesterday to management and was turned down. However, we are still looking at other opportunities. JLU has become great for customized product for retailers, so there are still more opportunities.

QUOTE
If Mattel makes a Giganta what size will she be?

The plan was to have a 10" Giganta with 5 other 4.75" figures. Whatever packout execution we will do, she will be big.

QUOTE
status on the Manhunter robots

Probably something for 2008+

QUOTE
Any chances for peg holes in everyone?

Our team has not discussed this in over a year. Let me bring up in the next team meeting. Probably too late for 2007. However, I think some females will get them.

QUOTE
Lobo is another figure that we've heard has already been sculpted. We all know why DC won't release him, but we don't know if there really is a sculpt. Is there?

The Lobo request has become a joke between my boss and I. WB and DC just do not feel Lobo is appropiate for a line that theoretically is meant for kids.

QUOTE
Also, rumors have suggested that Cheetah, the Manhunters and even Capt Marvel were going to be made (yes, even Marvel, despite the persistant legal issues). Can you set us straight on those?

Cheeta has been on and off the list. Manhunters are also in that category. Capt Marvel is a no. If we do not make cheeta or the Manhunters in 2007, 2008 could be a good year to see them.

QUOTE
Hey Azrael24- Not to rain on anyone's parade...but I am fairly certain the it was Blue DEVIL NOT Devil Ray that I reported was strongly being hinted at during SDCC...If I remember correctly, Devil Ray didnt even come up in the panel, but Blue Devil came up and received an enthusiastic response from the Mattel panel...

Correct

QUOTE
Boy Wonder, are there any plans to make an Alfred or Commissioner Gordon figure for The Batman line?

Men in suits don't sell to kids. Since Animated is so kid targeted, these figures are unlikely. The 6" line would be a better place to find them down the road.

QUOTE
Is there anything seriously being done about the quality assurance on the JLU figures? I've really loved the JLU this whole time, with the exception of the new Doomsday. It was a total disaster paint wise. I even picked the best one out of the 2 cases available. The front was ok, but his back was a joke. Is this something that can be looked into and rectified? I've noticed QA on the JLU has really been going downhill recently.

This should not happen. Let me connect with HK. Thanks for bringing to my attention.

QUOTE
Before Rocket Red was set as a single, I had heard Etrigan was supposed to be coming out instead? Was he planned for a single release and if not, will he ever be?

I think it has something to do with him not fitting in the single packs. I forget why he won't be in the singles.

QUOTE
1. I may be beating a dead horse...but it just seems like a "no-brainer" to make Atom Smasher and Giganta in the 10" format. What is the reasoning behind this idea being passed up by the powers that be? I have seen the two packs at TRU and I think this would be a great exclusive idea for one of the chains (Walmart,Target or TRU)

I like the way you think. I just suggested a 10" Atom Smasher as the replacement for the 10" Giganta. Management wanted to launch with a male figure. I should know more before xmas...

QUOTE
2. Is there a chance that Mattel will go back to the original sculpts of first wave of figures? Personally I do not care for the "jointed" versions and would really like to see the originals included in any future two, three or six packs

Check out Big Lots for the 2004 product. I know what you mean... I was playing with some of the figures in a meeting the other day, and I didn't care for the articulation on some of the figures.

QUOTE
2- Has any work been done on the '08 line? If so any hints as to who is included?

No work has started on 08 JLU; however, we are discussing 08 plans, and I think this line still has legs. My reco over the next few weeks will be to continue making figures.

That's all for now. I will be back between Thanksgiving and Christmas.

rediahs- 11-11-2006
wow thanks for posting those vader... many questions answered smile.gif

Grundy- 11-11-2006
Thanks for the info Peter,

Looks like I wont be letting go of my custom Lobo and Captain Marvel anytme soon biggrin.gif

Great news to all of us JLU collectors. I am glad that the line is still going strong despite the fact that it no longer has the animated series to back it up cool.gif

ThunderBreak- 11-11-2006
That is indeed great news for all JLU collectors... looks like they covered everything...

... except someone should tell them that we don't have target and walmart in this part of the world... we only have TRU which, unfortunately, does not carry US exclusives... They should know US retailer only exclusives make collecting JLU figures difficult for Asian collectors... Isn't it a bit unfair... considering they manufacture those figs here in Asia.

... I agree with you, Grundy... better hold on to your CM and Lobo customs... your customs are perfect!

Clark Ken- 11-11-2006
include Hal jordan in that list bro grundy biggrin.gif
